What is methadone?
Methadone( Methadose) is an opioid medication which is sometimes called a narcotic. Methadone reduces withdrawal symptoms in people addicted to heroin or other narcotic drugs without causing drug addiction.
As part of drug addiction detoxification and maintenance programs, Methadone is used as a pain reliever. It is available only in certified pharmacies.
How should I use methadone?
Methadone might be habit-forming, even at regular doses. Never share this medicine with another person. MISUSE OF NARCOTIC MEDICATION CAN CAUSE severe ADDICTION, OVERDOSE, OR even DEATH, especially in a child or other person using the medicine without a prescription.
Follow all directions written in your prescription. Methadone can slow or stop your breathing, especially when you start using this medicine or whenever your dosage is changed. Never use this medicine in larger amounts, or more than prescribed. Tell your doctor if the medicine seems to be stop working in relieving your pain.
Measure liquid medicine with a dosing syringe, or a special dose-measuring spoon or medicine cup. If you do not have a measuring device, then ask your pharmacist for one.
Dissolve the tablet in at least 4 ounces of water, orange juice, or other non-alcoholic beverage. Allow the tablet to disperse in the liquid. The tablet will not dissolve completely. Drink this mixture right away. To get the whole dose, add a some more water to the same glass, swirl gently and drink right away.
What happens if I miss a dose?
Take the missed dose if it is not the time for your next scheduled dose, then take your next dose 8 to 12 hours later. do not take the missed dose if it is almost time for your next scheduled dose.
What happens if I overdose?
A methadone overdose without a prescription, can be fatal, especially in a child or other person using the medicine. So Seek emergency medical attention.
